Iris McDermott (painter, potter)

When the subject matter of a painting is ordinary, when it compromises the objects of every day life, a vase of flowers, a kitchen table, a chair, a bit of wall paper, some drapery - when it comprises many of the objects we live with every day, it must be very good to hold our attention, to be worthy of hanging on our wall, perhaps in a room with its own vase, table, chair, and drapery.  It must have something special.  Something of the exquisite sense of design and composition of a Matisse, the living colors of Bonnard, the disturbing energy of Van Gogh or Gauguin, or the otherworldly qualities of Dali.

It must have some of this.  Iris McDermott's Interiors have some of these qualities, along with a very delicate touch and a fine appreciation for the simple pleasure of familiarity.
